Bodog, 1st Technology fight continues

Posted on October 31st, 2007 in Poker News by Fayaz

Another chapter in the ongoing battle between Bodog and 1st Technology has unfolded. In the new twist, 1st Technology seems to have taken notice of Bodog Founder Calvin Ayre’s online expertise and strategic use of media to inform the public of the ongoing lawsuit’s details.

After witnessing Bodog’s ability to rapidly react to losing control of its domains, 1st Technology has issued a press release with a number of inaccuracies regarding the case and Ayre’s actual legal involvement. Often contradicting the same points initially and legally argued by 1st Technology, the press release exposed a noticeable degree of desperation.

It should be emphasized that Ayre has no connection to the company named in the lawsuit, Bodog Entertainment Group SA, a former supplier of data entry and other services including domain management, leading to Bodog.com’s domains becoming involved in this inaccurately filed case. That company no longer holds rights for usage of the Bodog name. Currently undergoing a name change in light of this withdrawal, the now dormant and asset bare company was formally shut down as of September 2006, months prior to when 1st Technology claims to have properly served the legal notice.

Furthermore, the fact that Ayre does not reside in the U.S. and thus would not be subject to any bench warrants, increasingly establishes the press release as an attempt to deface Ayre.

Adding to the drama, it has been confirmed that 1st Technology frontman Scott Lewis has personally emailed Ayre via his blog (www.calvinayrelife.com) with an informal request to have the “Patent Troll” moniker withdrawn from any future references.

Not to be outdone, Calvin Ayre has humorously taken the lawsuit soap opera one step further by issuing a mixed martial arts challenge to Scott Lewis. In a posting on his blog, Ayre offers to put $1 million in trust with a lawyer as a monetary reward to Lewis if he is able defeat Ayre in the ring. Contrarily, if Lewis is defeated, Ayre has stated that 1st Technology would have to return control of the hijacked domains as these are the only interests he has in the lawsuit, previously noting that Bodog is not involved with the lawsuit against an unassociated and inactive company.

“Bodog is an entertainment and media based company. This is our playing field. The 1st Technology patent trolls will have a hard time applying any pressure on Bodog and myself. If 1st Technology’s interests lie in leveraging media coverage to accomplish this, what better way to get some exposure than to stage the battle inside the ring of one of most popular spectator sports on the planet?” said Bodog Founder Calvin Ayre.

Whether or not the physical duel will commence remains to be seen, but the reaction 1st Technology’s Scott Lewis provides to the challenge itself is sure to be entertaining.

LONDON, England — BBC’s reality investment program Dragons’ Den has made an investment in online gaming site GamingAlerts.co.uk. Aired on the 22nd of October, Emmie Matthews and Ed Stevens, founders of the site, recieved a £200,000 investment for their gaming site; marking the single largest amount ever awarded on the immesely popular program.

The Dragons’ Den panellists are famous for striking fear into the hearts of the hopefuls who turn up asking for investment. But Dragon Theo Paphitis was so impressed with their project he agreed to invest all the money on his own.

According to Matthews, Paphitis was excited about his investment because: “Theo knows the current and future value of online gaming and sees it as a major growth industry. He invested because of our years of experience in gaming, and because of our track record of success. In fact, Mrs Paphitis plays online bingo all the time so Theo understood the value of the company and its large consumer appeal.”

The winning concept of Gaming Alerts is to deliver up-to-date offers, advice and bonuses direct to the desktop of online gamblers from major online casinos, online poker rooms, online bingo sites and online sportsbooks.

Users select their interests, and Gaming Alerts tailors the best odds, bonuses, free bets and freeroll poker tournaments that fit the player’s exact criteria. This tailored-content solution is a convienience for users and a hugely valuable media outlet for online gaming sites.

Dragon, Theo Paphitis said “I am delighted to be working with the Gaming Alerts team, I think the whole concept of proactively alerting users to the best bonuses and offers is truly revolutionary and Ed and Emmie have really brought the idea to life, I am looking forward to working with them and realising the potential of the company.”

The founders have an exclusive agreement with technology supplier Skinkers, the market leaders in desktop communication, who are also the suppliers to the BBC and Sky News alerts services.

Stevens said “Gaming Alerts makes money the same way moneysupermarket.com or confused.com does – by referring customers or users from our site to operators in exchange for commissions.”

Paphitis has built his fortune on turning businesses into successes. He has transformed Ryman, Contessa, La Senza and Partners the Stationers into successful and profitable retail companies. He now heads up a 350-store chain a group turnover approaching 250m. Theo’s style and knowledge is part of the reason why Dragons’ Den has been such a huge ratings hit since its launch in 2005.
