Bodog loses domain name battle

Posted on August 29th, 2007 in Poker News, Poker Rooms by Fayaz

Bodog.com, the popular online gambling brand which was fighting real tough to hold on their domain name, has finally lost the battle. Considered as one of the giants in the online gambling world, Bodog lost its domain name bodog.com as a consequence of a lawsuit filed by a Las Vegas company.

1st Technology, the company which has filed a suit against Bodog, says that the Bodog software download by its customers infringes upon their patents. 1st Technology LLC obtained a $48.6 million default judgement back on June 14 against Bodog which the company failed to answer, most probably fearing action from the U.S Department of Justice.

As a fallout of the current situation, Bodog have now lost their domain name and nothing exists at Bodog.com. However, Bodog founder Calvin Ayre has moved swiftly and set up newbodog, where players can continue playing and betting.

Ayre claims the domain name trouble is “the result of a legal dispute over the ownership of the Bodog.com domain name.” According to a report published in Jackpot.co.uk, Ayre goes on to explain that they will fight the dispute and is confident that they will win.

Betting analysts say that loss of business to Bodog could be more than $48.6 million they had to pay to 1st Technology LLC. Bodog ranking in search engines, such as Google has been remarkable. Bodog sympathisers fear that the potential customers who arrive at the old domain will simply go somewhere else.

Malta to capture UK online gambling business

As a fallout of the recent UK legislation on online gaming advertising, major online gambling players including some of the famous online poker rooms and casino companies such as Intercasino, William Hill, Littlewoods, Playboy Casino and Virgin Games have decided to start their operations from Malta in the near future.

A report published in part time poker news, quoted The Malta Times and said that Malta, which was whitelisted by the UK Gambling Commission, will be exempt from regulations prohibiting online gaming firms from advertising in the UK. The country currently has 84 licensed internet gambling operators, with a letter of intent issued to 76 others and 36 companies with pending applications.

Officials expect that they will eventually see businesses move their physical operations to Malta as well. “Our regulations are very much in line with the EU’s, and we have shown that we are capable of protecting operators - so it won’t be long before the physical operations move to Malta,” Mario Galea, chief executive of the Lotteries Gaming Authority, told The Times yesterday, the report said.

MIAMI, Florida — PTseats.com recently launched the only on- line booking service for tournament poker spots with its first casino partner, the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. The online booking agency offers fast, secure and convenient tickets to play poker at tournaments anywhere in the United States, a press release said.

According to Fabricio Schaffrath, the company’s founder, “Booking through PTseats.com allows players to secure a poker tournament seat anywhere, anytime, from any computer. It’s fast and easy. And it’s convenient for both the players and the casinos.”

To purchase a seat, the public must create an account, select their preferred location and pay in advance using a credit or debit card. The cost of a guaranteed buy-in seat at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City varies according to the tournament. PTseats.com charges a service fee for the transaction that is a percentage of the buy-in price.

“PTseats.com is perfect for any tournament player that wants to have a guaranteed seat without waiting in long registration lines,” said Tom Gitto, director of Poker Operations at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. “Our tournament players love it.”

Phil Gordon, a WTC champion and best-selling author, was an early supporter of PTseats.com. “This is a great, convenient service that I’m sure players will love,” he commented.

Mr. Gordon is contributing a monthly column to the website. His first two pieces, available at http://www.ptseats.com/phil.php, discuss using patience and aggression at the table.

According to Mr. Schaffrath, the ticketing website is also negotiating with other gaming interests throughout the United States. “The concept has been well received overall. Casinos benefit from the shorter lines and reduced staff needed to handle registration and by having less cash to handle on the spot,” he said.

Currently, PTseats.com accepts credit and debit cards including Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and JCB. On its website, the company uses Verisign Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology, the industry standard for secure on-line commercial transactions.
